Onyx is a banded variety of chalcedony, consisting of intergrowths of the silica minerals quartz and moganite. The layered bands are typically parallel to one another, bringing a unique appearance and strikingly dramatic appeal. Onyx is often regarded as a great alternative to granite, marble and other more popular natural stone surfaces. Onyx generally comes in swirling and pastel color patterns.
